Seymour lies in the Naugatuck Valley of western Connecticut, where the river cuts a narrow corridor through hilly country. On a map the town takes its shape from that corridor. The river and the Route 8 highway run side by side through the centre, and residential streets branch off to climb the slopes on either side.
Like many valley towns in the region, Seymour grew around water-powered industry in the nineteenth century, when the river's falls drove mills and factories. The town takes its name from Thomas H. Seymour, a nineteenth-century governor of Connecticut. The compact downtown still sits close to the water, where that industrial life was concentrated.
