Shache, historically known as Yarkand, lies in the south-west of the Tarim Basin, on an oasis watered by the Yarkand River as it flows down from the mountains to the south. From above, the town is a compact knot surrounded by a dense patchwork of irrigated fields, canals and village roads. The desert begins where the water runs out.
For centuries Yarkand was one of the major stops on the southern Silk Road, linked to Kashgar, Khotan and the mountain passes beyond. In the sixteenth century it became the capital of the Yarkent Khanate, and the tombs of its rulers remain in the old town. The khanate is also associated with Amannisa Khan, the queen credited with collecting the Uyghur Twelve Muqam.

Around the town, narrow roads and irrigation channels divide the land into small fields. They form a dense, fine-grained pattern across the outer parts of the map.
Yarkand River
The river that makes the oasis possible runs past the town. It feeds the network of canals that the whole settlement and its farmland depend on.
