Shisō covers a large, mostly mountainous part of western Hyōgo. On a map it is dominated by forest and ridgelines. The streets and buildings are pushed into the valleys, and most of all into the corridor of the Ibo River, which runs south through the city toward the Harima plain and the Inland Sea.
The city in its current form was created by the merger of several towns and villages in the 2000s. You can read that on the map: there is no single dense core but a chain of small centres, each tied to the river or a tributary valley. The largest of them, the old town of Yamasaki, sits where the valley widens, and its streets are packed onto the flat ground.
A Shisō map poster is a study in contrast. Thin lines of road and river twist through wide empty areas of mountain, and each cluster of streets looks deliberate against so much open ground.
