Shoreham Beach spit
A shingle bar runs east between the Channel and the river, lined with houses and roads. It forms a narrow strip of land that is the town's most distinctive feature.

Shoreham-by-Sea Map Poster & Print
Shoreham-by-Sea grew up where the River Adur reaches the English Channel. The river does not flow straight out to sea. Instead it turns east behind a long shingle spit, and that spit is now covered by the houses of Shoreham Beach. The town centre faces this sheltered stretch of water, with the harbour mouth further along.
Upstream, the Adur is crossed by several bridges, among them the old wooden toll bridge at Old Shoreham. Beside the river lies Shoreham Airport, one of the oldest licensed airfields in Britain. Its runways and art deco terminal make a clear geometric shape among the flat meadows. On the far bank, the chapel of Lancing College stands above the valley.
A Shoreham-by-Sea map poster gathers river, spit, harbour and airfield into one balanced composition. The long, parallel bands of beach, estuary and town give the map a strong horizontal rhythm. The Adur valley opening northwards towards the South Downs provides a natural vertical accent.

The Adur estuary
The river widens into a tidal channel along the town centre before turning towards the harbour mouth. Several bridges cross it, and houseboats line parts of the bank.
Historic airfield
Shoreham Airport's crossing runways sit on the flat ground beside the river. They are an unusual, clean-lined feature for a small coastal town map.
