Şidfā lies in Asyut governorate in Upper Egypt, south of the city of Asyut, on the fertile strip of the Nile valley. It is the centre of a district of the same name, and like many towns in the region it depends closely on the river and on the irrigation network that carries its water out across the flood plain.
On a map the valley has an unmistakable structure. The cultivated land is divided into long, narrow fields bounded by canals and drainage channels, and the town appears as a compact knot of closely packed streets within them. Lanes are short and irregular, following old property lines, while a few wider roads link Şidfā to the villages and highways along the valley.
