Sighetu Marmaţiei is the historic centre of Maramureş, in Romania's far north. It sits on the left bank of the Tisa, and the river forms the border with Ukraine here. On a map, the Tisa draws a broad curve along the town's northern side, and the smaller Iza comes in from the south-east to meet it. The streets are laid out in the wedge of land between the two rivers.
The centre is compact, with a central square and streets radiating from it toward the river crossings and the valley roads. Outside that core, the pattern loosens into houses with long gardens and orchards, typical of Maramureş, and wooded hills rise beyond the floodplain. The town is the birthplace of the writer Elie Wiesel, and his childhood house is now a museum. The former political prison has been turned into the Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance. Where rivers meet
The Iza flows into the Tisa near the town. Its valley, one of the main routes into Maramureş, reaches toward Sighet from the south-east.
Compact centre
The old centre is small and closely built. Streets branch out from it toward the bridges and the valley roads, and a looser suburban weave surrounds it.
