Singen lies in the Hegau, a landscape in southern Baden-Württemberg known for the eroded volcanic hills that rise from its plain. The town spreads across the valley floor. A dense centre sits by the railway, and residential districts and industrial areas extend outward, while the steep cone of Hohentwiel stands just west of the streets.
Hohentwiel is crowned by the ruins of one of Germany's largest fortresses, and it hosts an open-air music festival each summer. Singen grew mainly in the industrial era, when its location on the railway drew factories, including the Maggi works founded by Julius Maggi in the late nineteenth century. Lake Constance and the Swiss border are both a short distance away.
