Situbondo lies near the north-eastern tip of Java, facing the Madura Strait. The town is compact and runs mostly east to west, following the main coastal road, with rice fields and plantations filling the land around it. To the south the terrain rises towards volcanic highlands, while the coastline to the north is shallow and fairly even.
The historic Great Post Road, built across Java in the early nineteenth century, ran along this coast to Panarukan, now part of the Situbondo area. Further east in the regency is Baluran National Park, a stretch of savanna and forest at the corner of the island, known for its open grasslands and wild banteng cattle.
