Siverskodonetsk lies in Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, on the left bank of the Siverskyi Donets. Lysychansk stands on the higher ground of the opposite bank. On a map, the two form a pair split by the river and its wide green floodplain, with the Sievierodonetsk side laid out on flatter land and the Lysychansk side climbing uneven terrain.
The city grew in the Soviet period around a large chemical industry, and its plan shows it. Wide avenues run in straight lines, apartment districts fill long rectangular blocks, and the industrial zone takes up a large, separate area at the edge of town. Before the war, it had also become the temporary administrative centre of the Luhansk region.
The city was heavily damaged in the fighting of 2022. A Siverskodonetsk map poster records its streets as a plan: the avenues, the neighbourhood blocks and the curve of the Donets. The central districts follow a regular planned layout, with broad straight avenues and large residential blocks. From above, it has a strict geometry typical of mid-century Soviet towns.
Industrial district
A large chemical works occupies its own area beside the residential city. Its big footprint, internal roads and rail sidings form a distinct block of pattern on the map.
