Solin lies immediately north-east of Split in Croatia, at the eastern end of Kaštela Bay on the Adriatic coast. It grew along the Jadro, a short, clear river that rises at the foot of the mountains and reaches the sea within a few kilometres. From above, the river's course is one of the defining lines of the town.
Solin stands on and around the site of Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the largest cities of the eastern Adriatic in antiquity. Remains of its walls, amphitheatre and early Christian basilicas are still visible, and Diocletian's palace in Split was built nearby as the emperor's retirement residence.
Today the town mixes older neighbourhoods by the river, newer residential areas and major roads connecting Split with the interior.
