Sololá sits on high ground on the northern side of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala's western highlands. The map captures a town built on a slope. A compact centre surrounds the plaza, streets climb and curve with the terrain, and roads descend steeply toward Panajachel and the lakeshore below.
The town is a regional centre for the Kaqchikel Maya, and its market days draw people from villages around the lake and across the hills. Traditional dress is still widely worn here. As the departmental capital, Sololá also has an administrative role alongside its commercial one.
