Solwezi is the capital of Zambia's North-Western Province, set in a landscape of low hills and miombo woodland not far from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For much of the twentieth century it was a small administrative town, and its original centre is still easy to pick out on a map as a compact cluster of streets around the main roads.
Since the opening of large copper mines nearby, above all Kansanshi just north of the town, Solwezi has grown quickly. New residential areas spread outward in loose, irregular grids, and unpaved roads branch off into the surrounding bush. The contrast between the older core and the looser outer districts gives the map a clear sense of a place still being built.
The main road toward the Copperbelt runs through the town, and small streams wind through the woodland around it. Growth toward the mines
Much of the recent expansion has followed the roads leading toward the copper mines. These newer areas appear on the map as looser, more irregular networks of streets.
Woodland setting
Beyond the built-up area, the landscape is largely woodland crossed by tracks and small streams, giving the edges of the map an open, unfinished quality.
