Sorgues sits a few kilometres north of Avignon, in the flat country where the rivers Ouvèze and Sorgue meet just before joining the Rhône. In the fourteenth century, the Avignon popes kept a residence here. Much later, in the summer of 1912, Picasso and Braque both worked in the town. Braque's papier collé experiments date from that stay.
On a map, water is what defines Sorgues. Rivers and channels curve across the town, dividing the older centre from the neighbourhoods around it. The Rhône, broad and slow, marks the western edge. Railway lines and main roads heading south to Avignon and north to Orange cut long straight lines through the gentle curves of the rivers.
