Soure is on the eastern side of Marajó, the vast river island at the mouth of the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Pará. It sits where the Paracauari River enters Marajó Bay, with the town of Salvaterra on the opposite bank. Unusually for the region, Soure is laid out as a regular grid of long, straight streets, which looks crisp and orderly on a map.
Beyond the grid the landscape turns wild: mangroves, tidal creeks, open grasslands and long sandy beaches such as Pesqueiro facing the bay. Marajó is famous for its water buffalo, which graze the island's floodplains and appear in local cooking, dairy and even the town's mounted police. The island is also known for its ancient Marajoara ceramics.
