Southwest Waterfront is a neighbourhood in the southwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., running along the Washington Channel between the National Mall and Fort McNair. On a map, the channel is the defining feature: a long, straight stretch of water with piers along one side and the green peninsula of East Potomac Park on the other.
The area was heavily reshaped by urban renewal in the 1950s and 1960s, which replaced much of the old street pattern with modernist housing and superblocks. More recently, The Wharf, a large mixed-use development that opened in 2017, rebuilt the shoreline with promenades, piers and new buildings. The Maine Avenue Fish Market, one of the oldest continuously operating open-air fish markets in the country, remains beside it.
