Staffa is a small, uninhabited island in the Inner Hebrides, lying off the west coast of Mull. From above it is compact and roughly oval, a grassy plateau surrounded by steep cliffs. There are no roads or buildings. The island's shape is set almost entirely by its rock, and its edges are where the interest lies.
Those edges are built from columnar basalt, formed as ancient lava flows cooled and cracked into regular, many-sided pillars. The most famous result is Fingal's Cave, a tall sea cave lined with columns, which inspired Felix Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture after his visit in 1829. The island is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, and puffins nest on its clifftops in summer.
Most people see Staffa from a boat trip out of Mull or Iona, landing briefly to walk the columns and the grassy top. A Staffa map poster frames the island as a small, solid form in the Atlantic, and a wider view can take in the scattered islands and coast of Mull around it.
