Starnberg sits where the Starnberger See comes to a point at its northern end, a short train ride from Munich. The lake stretches south for roughly twenty kilometres, and on a map the town reads as the anchor at its top: a harbour front, a promenade along the shore, and streets climbing gently up the moraine hills that surround the water.
The River Würm leaves the lake here and flows north toward Munich; the lake itself was once known as the Würmsee. The railway runs right along the shoreline, separating the town from its lakefront. Further down the eastern shore lies Berg, where King Ludwig II of Bavaria died in the water in 1886, a spot marked today by a cross standing in the lake.
