Stoke-on-Trent is not one town but six: Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, federated in 1910. On the map they appear as a chain of distinct centres, each with its own knot of streets, strung from north to south and linked by roads that once joined separate pottery communities. The Trent and Mersey Canal winds through the valley, joined by the Caldon Canal near Etruria, and the River Trent flows through the city not far from its source.
