Sucre is Bolivia's constitutional capital and home to its Supreme Court. It lies in a valley at about 2,800 metres, and its plan is a clear colonial chessboard. Square blocks spread out from the Plaza 25 de Mayo, and the regular pattern holds across the historic centre before bending where it meets rising ground. Two hills, Churuquella and Sica Sica, overlook the city.
The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its whitewashed churches and houses, which earned Sucre the name the White City. In 1825 Bolivian independence was declared in the Casa de la Libertad on the main square. Newer neighbourhoods have since climbed the valley sides and spread along the roads out of town.
