Sunam lies in the Sangrur district of Punjab, on the level farmland of the Malwa region. On a map the town shows up as a tight, irregular cluster of lanes. Around it the streets grow wider and more regular as they reach newer neighbourhoods. Past them are open fields, crossed by long straight roads that lead to nearby towns.
The old centre is the most intricate part of the sheet. Narrow streets branch and turn with no overall grid, as they do in many towns of the plain that grew over centuries. A railway line passes by the town, and its straight track and station yard stand out against the looser pattern of the residential streets.
A Sunām map poster is also a tribute to the town's best-known son. The revolutionary Udham Singh was born here in 1899, and in his honour the town is often called Sunam Udham Singh Wala. Long, nearly straight roads run out from the edge of town across flat farmland toward neighbouring towns in Sangrur district and beyond.
