Sungai Udang lies northwest of Melaka city, near the coast of the Strait of Malacca. It is not built as a single compact town. From above it looks like a loose collection of housing estates, roads and large industrial sites, separated by plantations and low green land, with the shoreline running along one side.
The area is best known for a large oil refinery complex near the coast, whose tanks and processing units form an unusual geometric pattern on a map: circles, straight service roads and neatly spaced blocks, very different from the curved streets of the housing estates nearby.
