This view of Tabuk centres on the western part of the city, where the land of Kalinga climbs out of the Chico River valley into the Cordillera Central. Tabuk covers a wide territory, and away from its lowland centre the map becomes a study in terrain. Roads follow the contours and streams cut narrow valleys.
Settlements here are small and scattered, strung along ridgelines or tucked into valley bottoms, and the few roads between them trace long switchbacks. Where the slopes allow, terraced and irrigated fields appear as tight bands of lines. A Tabuk map poster centred on these uplands has a delicate, almost topographic character.
Kalinga is known for its strong upland traditions, and the Chico River that drains these hills has a place in recent Philippine history. In the 1970s, plans to dam it met sustained resistance from local communities and were eventually abandoned. On paper, the result feels less like a town plan and more like a portrait of the land.
