Taesal-li lies on the western coast of South Chungcheong Province, where the land breaks into peninsulas, bays and tidal flats along the Yellow Sea. The coastline is the dominant feature of the map. Its sharp headlands, sheltered inlets and straight edges of reclaimed ground surround a compact settlement of small streets.
This part of the Korean west coast has changed a great deal over the past few decades. Large industrial and port facilities now line parts of the shore, while the older settlements and farmland keep their smaller, irregular patterns. The two scales sit close together, and the map shows the difference clearly.
