Taoluo lies on the coast of south-eastern Shandong, within the city of Rizhao and facing the Yellow Sea. From above, the shoreline runs in a long, fairly straight line, with beaches, small harbours and aquaculture ponds along its edge. Inland, the town's streets form a compact centre, and the flat coastal plain around it is divided into fields, villages and a growing network of modern roads.
The Rizhao coast is known for its long beaches, fishing and green tea, grown on the hills near the sea. Taoluo shares in that coastal economy. Near the shore, the regular shapes of fish and shrimp ponds and small ports appear on the map, while newer industrial and residential blocks have spread as the Rizhao area has developed.
