Tapachula is the main city of the Soconusco, the fertile strip of lowland between the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and the Pacific. It lies close to the Guatemalan border. Its map shows a regular grid spread across gently sloping ground and cut by rivers that come down from the mountains to the north, among them the Coatán on the city's western side.
The Tacaná volcano stands on the border itself and rises beyond the city. The foothills around it hold some of Mexico's best-known coffee farms. The Soconusco has long been a coffee and fruit-growing region. German planters who arrived in the late nineteenth century helped shape it, as did Chinese and Japanese immigrants who settled in the city.
Tapachula has long been a crossroads for people and goods moving between Central America and Mexico. The port of Puerto Chiapas lies on the coast to the southwest. A Tapachula map poster shows the ordered grid of the city set against its rivers and the roads leading toward the coast and the border.

Roads to the border
Highways lead southeast toward the Guatemalan border crossings and southwest toward the coast. These long lines tie the city to the wider Soconusco region.
