Tarauacá is in the state of Acre in western Brazil, deep in the Amazon basin. The town sits on the Tarauacá River, which winds through the forest in wide meanders. On a map, the town fills a stretch of dry ground along the bank, with a compact grid of streets giving way quickly to forest and to the river's looping channel.
For much of the town's history, the river was the main route in and out, while today the BR-364 highway also connects it with the rest of Acre. Tarauacá is well known in Brazil for growing unusually large pineapples, which are celebrated at a local festival. It is a detail that says a lot about how the town sits within its farming and forest landscape.
