Tavolara lies off the northeastern coast of Sardinia, just south of the Gulf of Olbia. It is a single block of limestone rising steeply from the sea, long and narrow, with dramatic cliffs on most sides. From above the island is slim and sharply defined, with a low, flat spit of land at its western end where the small landing, beach and few buildings are found.
Almost all of the island is steep and wild. There are no roads across it, only a handful of paths, and its ridge is left to wild goats and seabirds. The surrounding waters form part of a marine protected area, and the island is a familiar sight from the Sardinian coast around Porto San Paolo.
Tavolara is also known for a curious piece of history: its family of residents claimed the title of kings of Tavolara in the nineteenth century, a story still told on the island.
