Taxco de Alarcón clings to a steep slope in northern Guerrero. Few places in Mexico look as unusual on a map. There is no grid here. Narrow cobbled lanes twist, fork and double back as they climb the hillside, and the town fills a bowl of mountains with a tight, knotted street pattern.
Taxco has been known for silver since colonial times, and its workshops and jewellery shops still define the town. At the centre stands the Baroque church of Santa Prisca, built with mining wealth in the eighteenth century. A cable car rises from the lower town to a hilltop, and the highway traces the lower edge of the slope.
