Templin is a small town in the Uckermark district of northern Brandenburg, in a landscape of lakes and forests. It is known for its medieval city wall, which survives almost in full around the old town, together with several gates and towers. Angela Merkel, the former German chancellor, grew up here.
On a map, the wall is unmistakable: a closed, roughly oval ring with the old town's street grid and market square inside it. Outside the ring, later districts spread in several directions. The lakes that give the area its character lie close to town, and long shorelines and forest cover fill much of the surrounding map.
