Temse is a municipality in East Flanders, on the left bank of the Scheldt between Ghent and Antwerp. The river dominates its map. Here it is wide and tidal, bordered by dikes and marshy floodplain, and crossed by the bridges that link Temse with Bornem on the other side. The old centre sits close to the water, and newer districts spread inland.
The road bridge at Temse was long known as the longest bridge in Belgium, and a separate railway bridge crosses nearby. Together they draw two firm lines across the water. For much of the twentieth century the town was also home to a major shipyard, the Boelwerf, and shipbuilding shaped both the riverfront and the town's identity.

The town meets the Scheldt along quays and former shipyard land. Here the edge of the built-up area follows the curve of the dike.
Floodplain and polders
Low meadows and polders border the river around the town. Dikes and ditches cross them, giving the outskirts a flat, finely drawn texture.
