Tepexpan lies in the municipality of Acolman in the State of México, on the flat land northeast of Mexico City. On a map it appears as a mesh of streets without a single dominant centre, blocks growing outward from older roads and filling the space between them. Open ground and fields still separate it in places from neighbouring towns, and the hills of the valley rise in the distance.
The land here was once close to the shores of Lake Texcoco, which covered much of the Valley of Mexico before it was drained. Tepexpan is known for a prehistoric discovery: in 1947 human remains, later called Tepexpan Man, were found nearby, and the town has a small museum devoted to the find and to the region's ancient past.
