From above, Thika sits on gently rising ground north-east of Nairobi. The Chania and Thika rivers wind around its edges, and their valleys trace darker, irregular lines through the grid of the town. A compact commercial centre gives way to looser residential blocks and industrial plots, and the pattern thins out into farmland on every side.
The most obvious line on the map is the Thika Road superhighway, which runs as a broad, confident stroke towards the capital. Around it, the street plan is practical rather than planned for show. Short blocks, roundabouts and feeder roads connect the old centre to newer estates, and the waterfalls on the rivers just outside town appear as small breaks in the curving watercourses.
Thika is known well beyond Kenya through Elspeth Huxley's memoir The Flame Trees of Thika, and locally for the pineapple plantations and processing industry that shaped its growth. Two river valleys
The Chania and Thika rivers curve around the town in narrow, meandering lines, framing the built-up area and adding natural movement to an otherwise practical street plan.
Farmland margins
At the edges of the poster the dense town grid dissolves into widely spaced rural roads, a clear visual record of where the town ends and the plantations begin.
