Tiruvannamalai lies in northern Tamil Nadu at the foot of Arunachala, a solitary hill that rises from the surrounding plain. The map has two clear centres. One is the hill itself, a large rounded shape free of streets. The other is the Annamalaiyar Temple, one of the largest temple complexes in India, whose rectangular walls and towering gateways anchor the grid of streets around it.
Arunachala is regarded as sacred, and pilgrims walk the Girivalam, a path of about fourteen kilometres that circles the base of the hill. During the Karthigai Deepam festival, a large flame is lit on the summit and can be seen across the town. The sage Ramana Maharshi lived here for most of his life, and his ashram on the hill's southern side still draws visitors from around the world.

The sacred hill rises beside the town as a wide, rounded area crossed only by a few paths. It gives the poster its large, calm open space.
