Tours occupies a band of land between two rivers: the wide Loire to the north and the Cher to the south, which run almost parallel before meeting downstream. On a map the city fills the space between them, and bridges stitch it to the districts on each bank. The Loire, with its islands and sandbanks, gives the top of the drawing a broad, calm edge.
A straight avenue, the Rue Nationale, runs south from the Pont Wilson across the old town, one of the clearest lines on the page. To its west lies Vieux Tours around the Place Plumereau, a tight grid of medieval lanes; to the east, the cathedral of Saint-Gatien stands near the river. Tours is also the city of Saint Martin, whose basilica remains a place of pilgrimage.
