Trat is the capital of Thailand's easternmost coastal province, close to the border with Cambodia. Most travellers know it as the gateway to Ko Chang and the other islands in the Gulf of Thailand, stopping in town before heading to the piers. On the map it is a compact centre set a little inland, beside a river winding towards the sea.
The town's streets form a small, mostly rectilinear core, with markets and shophouses close together. The river curves along one side, and to the south the land turns into low, wet ground leading to mangroves and the coast. Beyond town, roads run south along the narrow strip of Thailand between the mountains and the sea.
