Três Pontas lies in the south of Minas Gerais, in rolling country covered with coffee plantations. The town takes its name from the Serra de Três Pontas, a ridge with three distinct summits that rises nearby. On a map, the town shows a fairly regular grid of blocks around the central square and church, with streets following the gentle slopes and fading into farmland.
Coffee has shaped the town's economy for generations, and the surrounding municipality is among the notable producers in a region known for its beans. The singer and composer Milton Nascimento grew up in Três Pontas, and the town is closely associated with him and with the musicians of the Clube da Esquina movement.
