Tripoli is organised around its waterfront. The old medina occupies a compact, nearly triangular area beside the harbour, its narrow lanes forming a dense web that is immediately recognisable on a map. Next to it stands the Red Castle, the Assaraya al-Hamra, a fortress complex overlooking what is now Martyrs' Square, where the older city meets the wide avenues of the twentieth century.
From this point, the modern city spreads east, west and south along the coast. Broad boulevards laid out during the Italian period lead away from the square, and later ring roads and highways extend the urban area into the flat land behind the shore. The coastline itself runs as one long, gently curving line across the whole composition.
A Tripoli map poster traces a city that has been occupied continuously for more than two thousand years. It was founded by the Phoenicians as Oea, and the Roman Arch of Marcus Aurelius still stands within the medina.
