Troitsk lies south-west of central Moscow, on the Desna River, and since 2012 it has been part of the city's New Moscow territories. On a map the town appears as a compact cluster of planned residential districts and institute campuses, bordered by the river valley on one side and wide forest on the others, with the Kaluga highway running close by.
From the mid-twentieth century Troitsk developed as a scientific centre, home to several institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences working in physics and related fields. Their large campuses, with their laboratory buildings and grounds, appear on the map as broad, open plots that differ clearly from the denser housing districts nearby.
