Tsurusaki is in the eastern part of Oita city, on the southern shore of Beppu Bay in Kyushu. From above, it sits between the lower reaches of the Oita and Ono rivers, two broad channels that cross the plain to the sea. Residential streets fill the land between them in a close, fine-grained pattern.
Along the shore the coastline is straight and angular. Large blocks of reclaimed land run out into the bay and hold the heavy industry of the Oita coastal zone. The contrast between those big geometric piers and the small streets inland is the most striking thing about the map.
The district is known for the Tsurusaki Odori, a Bon festival dance with a long history, performed each summer and recognised as an important folk tradition. A Tsurusaki map poster shows a place defined by its rivers, its made-made shoreline and the dense neighbourhoods in between.
