Tubuai is the main island of the Austral Islands in French Polynesia, lying well south of Tahiti. From above it is a compact, rounded island made of two volcanic hill groups linked by a low central plain. It is surrounded by a wide lagoon, enclosed by a barrier reef with scattered small islets, or motu, on its edge.
The island has a well-known place in Pacific history: in 1789 the mutineers of HMS Bounty tried to settle here and began building a fort before leaving for Pitcairn. Today a coastal road circles the island, linking villages such as Mataura, the administrative centre, and Mahu.
