Tübingen is built on a ridge between two rivers. The Neckar runs along the south side of the old town and the smaller Ammer along the north. On a map the historic centre is a tight knot of crooked lanes climbing toward Hohentübingen Castle on the Schlossberg. Newer districts spread out along the valleys and up the surrounding slopes.
The Neckar is the town's best-known line. A long, narrow island divides the river in front of the old town, planted with a straight avenue of plane trees, and the riverside houses face it across the water. The Eberhard Karls University, founded in 1477, has shaped the town for more than five centuries. Below the castle, the historic centre is a dense tangle of short, bending lanes that squeeze between the two rivers. It contrasts sharply with the looser streets of the outer districts.

Wooded ridges such as the Österberg and Spitzberg push close to the centre, so development follows the valley floors and leaves green gaps on the map.
