Tunapuna lies on the East–West Corridor, the band of towns that runs along the southern foot of the Northern Range in Trinidad. From above, the Eastern Main Road runs through it as a spine, with streets branching north into the hills and south towards the flatter land and the Churchill–Roosevelt Highway.
The town is known for its market and as a commercial centre for the surrounding district. The University of the West Indies campus at St Augustine is next door, and the Benedictine abbey of Mount St Benedict looks down over the area from the hillside just to the north.
A Tunapuna map poster shows the town's clear north–south contrast. To the north, tight streets turn into winding roads climbing the green slopes. To the south, a more regular grid spreads across the plain. The long east–west roads tie it into the chain of neighbouring towns.
