Tunis lies at the head of the Gulf of Tunis, but its centre does not touch the sea directly. From above, water frames the city on several sides. To the east is the shallow Lake of Tunis, crossed by a causeway and channel toward La Goulette, and to the southwest is the larger Sebkha Sejoumi salt flat. Low hills rise to the north and west.
Between these bodies of water sits the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its dense tangle of lanes and courtyards shows up as a compact, almost solid mass on the map, with the Zitouna Mosque at its centre. From the medina, the colonial-era Avenue Habib Bourguiba runs straight east toward the lake, lined by a regular grid of streets.
The ancient site of Carthage lies along the coast to the northeast, beyond the lagoon, and its ruins and residential suburbs belong to the wider metropolitan area. A causeway and navigation channel cross the shallow lagoon east of the centre toward La Goulette. Together they draw a straight line across a broad expanse of water.
Avenue Habib Bourguiba
This long, straight boulevard runs from the edge of the medina toward the lake. It is the main axis of the modern city and a clear line on the poster.
