Tupã is in the Alta Paulista region of western São Paulo state. It is a relatively young town that grew up during the westward expansion of farming and railways in the twentieth century. Its name comes from Tupã, the thunder deity of Tupi-Guarani tradition, and the town is home to the Museu Índia Vanuíre, dedicated to Indigenous peoples of the region.
The plan is orderly. Streets run in a regular grid, with long avenues crossing it and blocks of similar size filling the centre. At the edges the grid meets rolling agricultural land, where roads follow ridges and field lines rather than straight survey marks.

Several wide avenues run through the grid and carry most of the town's movement. On the print they are drawn as bolder lines that organise the blocks.

Around the town the land rises and falls gently. Rural roads curve to follow the terrain, which contrasts with the straight streets in the centre.
