Túquerres lies high in the Andes of Nariño, in southern Colombia, at an elevation of around three thousand metres. The town is laid out on a regular Spanish colonial grid, with a central plaza surrounded by blocks of streets. On the map, the grid sits neatly on an open plateau. Around it, the land is divided into small, irregular fields.
To the west rises the Azufral volcano, whose crater holds the Laguna Verde, a green lake known for its colour. The countryside around Túquerres is intensively farmed, and potatoes and other highland crops are grown on the slopes. Roads link the town to Ipiales, Pasto and the coast, winding through steep valleys and across the plateau.
