Tutume is one of the larger villages of Botswana's Central District, in the north-east of the country. From above, it spreads across flat, open sandveld, with homestead plots set along a loose network of tracks. There are no hills or rivers to pin the layout, so the pattern follows the land's evenness and the main roads leading in.
As the centre of its sub-district, Tutume has government offices, schools and a hospital, and it serves many smaller villages nearby. Like many Botswana villages it covers a lot of ground for its population. Wide yards and open space between houses make the plan look airy, with tracks crossing each other at easy angles.
