Uíge is the capital of the province of the same name in northern Angola, set on a hilly plateau well inland from the Atlantic. The terrain is rolling and green, and from above the city does not form a rigid grid. Its streets follow ridges and slopes instead. The older colonial centre is fairly compact, and newer neighbourhoods spread along the surrounding hills.
During the colonial period the town was known as Carmona, and the region around it became one of Angola's main coffee-growing areas. That agricultural history still shows on the map. Roads leading out of the city wind through farmland, small settlements and patches of forest rather than running straight across open plains.
Today the city is the commercial and administrative centre for a large rural province near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
