Ujjain is one of the oldest cities in India, set on the Malwa plateau in Madhya Pradesh. The Shipra River curves around the western side of the old city, and its bank is lined with ghats, steps leading down to the water. From above, the older districts near the river are a dense mesh of narrow lanes, while newer parts of the city spread out to the east.
The Mahakaleshwar temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, stands near the centre and draws pilgrims from across the country. Ujjain is also one of the four cities where the Kumbh Mela is held, here known as the Simhastha, which takes place about every twelve years and fills the riverbanks with temporary camps.
A Ujjain map poster also reflects the city's place in the history of Indian astronomy. For centuries, the prime meridian of Hindu astronomy was placed at Ujjain, and an eighteenth-century observatory still stands there. The Tropic of Cancer passes nearby.
