Ulu Kelang lies on the north-eastern fringe of the Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area, where the flat city begins to rise into the foothills of the Titiwangsa range. On a map, this shows as a band of housing estates with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, pressed against a darker, emptier zone of forested hills to the east.
The road pattern responds to the slopes. Estates are laid out in loops and terraces, while larger roads, including the Middle Ring Road 2, carry traffic along the valley toward the city. Streams and reservoirs add small patches of water, and the edge between suburb and forest is sharp and irregular.
