Upington sits on the northern bank of the Orange River in the Northern Cape, at the edge of the Kalahari. From above, the contrast is striking: a narrow band of irrigated land follows the river, split by channels and islands, while beyond it the open desert stretches out with only roads and a few tracks crossing it.
The river makes the town possible. Vineyards, many of them producing grapes for raisins and wine, line the irrigated strip for long distances upstream and downstream, and the island just outside town is known for an avenue of date palms. The street layout itself is regular, with a compact centre close to the water and residential districts extending away from it.
